From El Bululú to El Bochinche: Candeleros Bring the Ritual to Wax

A vibrant split 12” vinyl blending Afro-Caribbean roots, psychedelia, and remix culture—out via Folcore Records.

Madrid-based South American collective Candeleros present El Bululú + El Bochinche, a split 12” coloured vinyl that captures the full spectrum of their sonic universe. Released by Folcore Records in an extra-limited edition of just 100 copies, the record brings together their two latest EPs in a single physical format—Side A dedicated to El Bululú and Side B to El Bochinche.

More than a release, this project feels like a living archive of cultural crossings. Candeleros weave Afro-Venezuelan rhythms, Caribbean grooves, cumbia, psychedelia, and electronic textures into a ritualistic dancefloor language—where percussion, synthesis, and storytelling coexist.

El Bochinche expands on the world introduced in El Bululú, diving deeper into themes of chaos, transformation, and community. Inspired by Madrid’s Lavapiés neighborhood—where the band first came together—the EP reflects a territory shaped by migration, resistance, and constant change. Its title speaks for itself: “bochinche” as noise, disorder, celebration, and friction all at once.

Tracks like “Se Va Volando”, featuring Desiré Paredes and Afro Libertad, bridge Venezuelan traditional chants with Castilian work songs, creating a dialogue between geographies and memory. Meanwhile, “Perro de Agua” draws from Indigenous and Afro-Venezuelan traditions, incorporating instruments such as quitiplás to evoke ancestral rhythms.

On the flip side, El Bululú channels collective energy into a more dance-driven experience. From the reinterpretation of the Turkish folk song “Yaylalar” in “La Meseta”, to the cumbia-salsa fusion of “Le Quedan Dos”, the EP moves between global references and local identities. Remixes by Caribombo and Piper Street Sound further extend its reach into club territories.

The release also features additional remixes by Phran and Pirámida, reinforcing Candeleros’ collaborative and transnational approach.

Visually, the project is brought to life by Bogotá-based artist SOMA (Laura Ortiz), whose artwork captures the duality of day and night, order and chaos—Bululú and Bochinche—through a deeply human and street-rooted lens.

This vinyl edition stands as both a collector’s item and a cultural statement: a snapshot of a band in constant motion, navigating between tradition and experimentation.
